From 1963 onwards, a total of 257 locomotives classed as the general-purpose electric locomotive 1042 were built. From 1966, more powerful engines were installed so that a maximum speed of 150 km/h could be achieved. These locomotives were designated as class 1042.5 engines.
The installation of a resistance brake necessitated their characteristic roof superstructure, and, in comparison to previously-supplied locomotives, the position of their single-arm pantographs was reversed. They were used to pull all types of train, but mainly express passenger and freight trains, also across the border into Germany.
The 1042.645 was assembled at Simmering-Graz-Pauker in Graz under the serial number 71120. Siemens was in charge of the electrical components. This locomotive was stationed at Wien-Süd after its delivery in March 1975.
