The Austrian Federal Railways (OBB) purchased, between 1934 and 1936, the large Diesel railcars of the series VT 42 which were based on the design of the diesel railcars of the series VT41. The vehicles had powerful motors (210 hp) and reached a top speed of 110 km / h. After the war, the ÖBB used the locomotives under the designation 5042. The railcars were used in express trains and others mainly on the lines of the Viennese Westbahn. For the progressive electrification of the main lines, the railcars of the series 5042 were placed in the last years of service on the branch lines of Lower Austria.
